Prep hockey: Marquette falls 5-4 to Midland
MIDLAND – The Marquette Senior High School hockey team rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the third period on Saturday, only to give up the game-winning goal with 26 seconds to play in a 5-4 loss at Midland.
Midland’s Brendan Witt scored twice for the hosts, making it a 2-2 game in the second before tallying the game-winner at 16:36 of the third period.
MSHS sophomore forward Jake Phillips tied the game at 1-1 with a goal at 7:42 of the first period. Marquette took a 2-1 lead 2:08 into the second period with a goal by sophomore forward Tony Fredrizzi that was assisted by senior forward Cole Rieboldt and senior defenseman Chris Amundsen.
Midland scored two goals within 39 seconds of each other in the second period to take a 4-2 lead into the third, but the margin was cut to one with an MSHS goal by senior forward Alex Zerbel 44 seconds after the intermission with assists going to junior forward Luke Schwemin and Rieboldt.
Marquette junior forward Brock Smith tied the game at 4-4 with an unassisted goal at 9:07 of the third.
Marquette outshot Midland 36-19 with goaltender Johnny Beckman making 31 saves for MSHS.
