Mackinac Bridge and U.S. 2 closed due to weather

St IGNACE – The Mackinac Bridge Authority as closed the Mackinac Bridge due to high winds and wintry weather conditions.

Motorists are asked to reduce their speed to 20 mph as they approach the bridge and to be prepared to stop, authority officials said in an advisory. Bridge personnel are stationed at both ends of the 5-mile span to provide instructions.

Also due to weather conditions, U.S. 2 was closed from I-75 in St. Ignace to M-77 at approximately 10 a.m. today, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Officials said U.S. 2 was experiencing high winds, heavy snow and complete whiteout conditions. Road crews have been pulled off the route as visibility is very poor and they are unable to keep up snow removal efforts, given the blowing snow.

Westbound traffic on US 2 is being detoured on I-75 to M-123 to M-28 to M-77 and eastbound traffic is being detoured along the same route in reverse (M-77, M-28, M-123, I-75).

Area law enforcement agencies have been notified and are involved in the closure.
