Elroy ‘Elk’ Donald Strand
EAU CLAIRE, WI. – Elroy “Elk” Donald Strand, age 87, devoted husband, loving father and loyal friend passed away at his home in Eau Claire, Wisconsin on Wednesday, January 22, 2014.
Elroy was born to Edwin and Madeline (Alitz) Strand in Nelson, Wisconsin on June 24, 1926. He graduated from Eau Claire High School in 1946 where he was an all-state athlete in basketball and golf. Upon High School graduation, he entered the United States Army and served on a military basketball team that entertained the troops. On his return from the service, he played basketball for the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (UWEC). He married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Agnes Erickson, on June 18, 1949 and shortly thereafter returned to the military to serve in Korea in 1950.
Elk spent a good part of his career in the television business, serving as general manager at WLUC TV Station in Marquette, Michigan and WEAU TV Station in Eau Claire. Following his work in the television industry, he owned and operated Eau Claire Travel World. During his tenure as owner of the travel agency, Elk and his wife, Ag, were able to travel to many places and enjoyed being the organizer of a number of UWEC basketball trips, including several to Hawaii.
Elk and his family were avid Packer fans and had the opportunity to host numerous Packer players in their home over the years. Elk was active in many community organizations including the Chamber of Commerce, the Masons as well as the Shriners.
He was the general chairman of his class reunion committee and spent many pleasurable hours planning and celebrating with this tight knit group of friends. Elk and Ag enjoyed many friendships over the years and were long time members of Eau Claire Golf and Country Club, enjoying many golf outings. In recent years, they were daily participants in morning swims at the Y.M.C. A. Elk and Ag were charter members of Trinity Lutheran Church and were devout in their faith.
Elroy leaves behind his wife, Agnes, three daughters, Kay (Lee) Mason of Marquette, Michigan, Barbara Larson of Eau Claire and Nancy (David) Bacharach of St. Cloud, Minnesota, one sister, Emily Lee, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Gerald and Gloria Erickson, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren along with many beloved nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and in-laws, brother Herbert and his wife Mary Ann Strand, sister Geraldine and her husband David Roy, and brother-in-laws Richard Erickson and Vernon Lee.
Memorial services will take place at 11 am on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1314 E. Lexington Blvd, Eau Claire, WI 54701. Pastor Brahm Semmler Smith will officiate. Visitation will take place at the church Saturday morning from 9:30 am until the time of service. Burial will take place at a later date in the Rest Haven Cemetery in the Town of Washington.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Elroy’s name to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Eau Claire Y.M.C.A.
