Officers for 2014 elected in Escanaba district
ESCANABA – The Escanaba School Board recently elected officers for the 2014 calendar year: Cathy Wilson as president, Marilyn Noble as vice president, Natalie Clouse as secretary, and Clyde (Jed) Gagnier as treasurer.
Marlene Valley, secretary to the superintendent, was appointed assistant secretary and Sue Furney, director of business services for the district, was appointed assistant treasurer.
Furney and Superintendent Michele Lemire were also approved for check signature authorizations for the 2014 year and Valley was appointed the board’s designee to assure compliance with requirements of the Open Meetings Act.
In addition, Furney and the district’s data specialist Brandy McDonald were approved as the district’s designees for electronic funds transfers.
The board also approved the first budget amendment for the 2013-14 budget adopted in June.
According to Lemire, the amended budget shows a slight increase from the original budget of $21,207,728 to $21,374,119 – an increase of $166,391.
The amended budget reflects a slight increase of $151,820 in expenditures, with total expenditures listed at $21,515,355.
The 2013-14 budget shows the district using $141,237 of its fund balance, leaving a projected unreserved fund balance of $648,263 on June 30, 2014 – the end of the district’s fiscal year.
“The increase in the revenue category is due primarily to enrollment changes, and the increase in expenditures is due primarily to staff that needed to be added to sufficiently address our students’ needs,” said Lemire.
In addition board members discussed moving forward in filling the vacancy left by former board vice president Nicole Dewar-Braun, who resigned from her position last month.
The board will hold an open interview of the following candidates to fill the vacancy at 6 p.m., Jan. 13, in the Escanaba Upper Elementary School Courtyard Room: Myra Croasdell, Kathleen A. Jensen, Adam Lambert, and Dean A. Peterson.
In other business, the board:
– approved Upper Peninsula State Bank as the district’s official depository for the 2014 calendar year.
– approved annual retainer contracts with the Thrun Law Firm of Lansing; Butch, Quinn, Rosemurgy, Jardis, Burkhart, Lewandowski & Miller P.C. of Escanaba; and Rehmann Robson audit firm of Traverse City, for the 2014 calendar year.
