Prep hockey: Negaunee routed by Houghton 9-0 at McInnes

HOUGHTON – Riley McKay notched his first prep hat trick as Houghton dominated Negaunee 9-0 in a make-up game played at MacInnes Student Ice Arena Thursday night.

The Great Lakes Hockey Conference victory puts the Gremlins at 12-1 overall and 7-0 in league play going into tonight’s rivalry game with Hancock at the Gremlins’ regular home rink, Dee Stadium.

Houghton scored seven times on 28 shots in the first period and five times in a period of 6:51 at the end of the frame.

McKay had goals two and three, then finished the hat trick with the last goal at 15:03 of the second before the goal-differential rule kicked in at the end of the period.

He was one of three Gremlins with five points, as Connor Hannon had two goals and a playmaker, while Reid Pietila had four assists and a goal. Jed Kallio also scored twice.

Negaunee goaltender Tyler Riutta finished with 40 saves on 47 shots in 34 minutes.

Houghton goalie Jayson Wiitala stopped nine shots for his third shutout of the season.
