Jacob Eugene ‘Jake’ Winter
GWINN, MI. – Jacob Eugene “Jake” Winter, age 92, formerly of 240 W. Jasper Street, Gwinn, entered eternal life Wednesday evening, January 8, 2014 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans.
Born May 10, 1921, in Negaunee, a son of Isaac and Matilda (Luipakka) Winter, Jake was raised in Negaunee and Gwinn, graduating from the Gwinn High School. He served his country in the U.S. Army overseas during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, Jake enrolled in a plumbing and heating course in Chicago and later working in Milwaukee.
On December 10, 1946 he married the former Marian L. Karsteadt in Kiel, Wisconsin and the couple returned to the Gwinn area where together they established their home and raised a family. Jake was employed for many years as a plumber, working for several plumbing companies throughout the years. He retired in 1981 and In March 1997, Jake’s wife, Marian, preceded him in death.
Jake was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union, Gwinn VFW Post #5670, and belonged to the cribbage league. In his spare time, he enjoyed traveling, camping, bowling, and playing cribbage.
Survivors include his daughter, Nancy (Joseph) Hulverson of Marquette; four sons, Richard (friend, Vicky Johnson) Winter of Gwinn, Robert (Jeannie) Winter of Milwaukee, WI, Steven Winter of Pocatello, ID, and Thomas (Kelly) Winter of Sands Township; six grandchildren, Pete (Angel) Winter, Robert and Lindsey Hulverson, Ben (Adele) Winter, Vincent Winter and Taylor Winter; two great-grandchildren, Avery Jacob Winter and Everley Winter; two sisters, Eleanor Lahti of Gwinn and Helvi Prusi of Negaunee; a brother, Leo (Lee) Winter of Vancouver, WA; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and first wife, Marian, Jake was preceded in death by brothers-in-law, Peter Lahti and George Prusi and his second wife, Ruth Perala Winter.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in the spring.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans Activity Fund.
