Marquette 19U girls sweep Traverse City

MARQUETTE – A three-game sweep of Traverse City in downstate Kalkaska the weekend of Jan. 4-5 stretched the Marquette U19 girls’ hockey team winning streak to seven games.

The local skaters won 3-0, 2-1 and 3-2.

Shea Blewett led the way offensively with three goals and an assist. Amanda Gray added two markers; Kara Salo, Shelby Gregoire and Brooke Swajanen each chipped in a goal and an assist; and Faith Martin collected two helpers.

Taylor Swajanen, Libbie Doney, Alex Paquette and Hailey Peterson contributed one assist apiece.

Rachel Livermore handled goaltending duties for Marquette (13-0-1), allowing but three goals in the three games.

OK Industrial takes


The Iron Range Hockey Association’s OK Industrial Squirt hockey team placed third in the Battle on the Border tournament in Iron Mountain Jan. 3-5.

The local team opened with a 10-8 loss to Escanaba despite five goals by Jacob Jestila. Nico Lukkarinen added two markers and Kaitlyn Williams one.

Jestila, Trey Gee and Trevor Midthun recorded assists for OK Industrial; Zach Ryynanen was in net.

The local team then fell to CCJHA Brockway, 15-1. Jestila notched the lone goal for OK Industrial. Carter Helsten tended goal.

OK Industrial then beat DAHA Hospitality twice, 7-2 and 6-3. Caleb Ackley was in net both games.

In the first contest, Jestila notched four goals, with Ryynanen, Gee and David O’Neill adding single tallies.

Jestila, Helsten, Gee and Midthun collected helpers.

In the second contest, Jestila scored four goals. Williams and Lukkarinen added single markers.

Ryynanen, Jestila, Williams and Connor O’Dovero drew assists.

In a playdown game Jan. 2, OK Industrial beat Ishpeming Concrete, 7-3.

Ackley and Jestila scored three goals each to pace the winners. Williams also dented the twine.

Jestila and Ackley were credited with assists.

Ryynanen was in net for OK Industrial.

Legion Bantams win


The American Legion Bantam AA hockey team of Marquette beat the Calumet Jr. Kings twice on Jan. 5, 5-1 and 7-3.

In the first game, Spencer DenBeste scored two goals. Shane Ring, Nick Bink and Spencer Samppala contributed single markers.

Collecting assists were Colin Gaffney and Justin Hendrickson.

Legion netminder Dylan Sibilsky made 16 stops.

In the second contest, Gavin Schwalbach and Bink netted two goals apiece. Ring, Ryan Morrissey and DenBeste chipped in single tallies for Legion (34-8-1 overall, 14-0 NIHL).

Drawing assists were DenBeste (4), Andrew Pieper and Bink.

Luke McCarthy came up with 23 saves in net for Marquette.

“We had two weeks off over Christmas (break) and it showed,” Legion head coach Brian Nebel said. “We were lacking speed and fundamentally, we were not sharp in (either game).”

Wells Fargo U14 sweeps

Dominating the Hodags of Rhinelander, Wis., the Wells Fargo U14 girls hockey team of Marquette posted 7-0 and 11-0 victories.

Briana Holman posted the shutouts in net.

In the first game, Paris Wegleitner and Alexis White notched two goals apiece. Sydney Lake, Hannah Zerbst and Lexi Anderson also found the net.

Drawing assists were White, Zerbst and Ashley Francis.

In the second contest, White turned in a hat trick and Lake scored on a penalty shot.

Anderson added a pair of goals, with other markers coming from Francis, Zerbst, Lexi Rabitaille, Hannah Swajanen and Julia Johnson.

Picking up helpers were Francis, Rabitaille, Lake, Johnson, Anderson and Ava Gillespie.
