NMU hockey: Dahlstrom named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week

MARQUETTE – Spearheading a pair of wins over Bemidji State last weekend, Northern Michigan University goaltender Mathias Dahlstrom has been named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week.

Dahlstrom gave up just two goals in 4-1 and 3-1 victories over the Beavers.

A 6-0, 175-pound freshman from Smedjebacken, Sweden, Dahlstrom stopped 60 of 62 shots on goal for a .968 series saves percentage. He posted four shutout periods and blanking the host Beavers on all nine series power-play chances.

In the 4-1 NMU victory, Dahlstrom played two shutout periods and made 28 saves while surrendering only a first period goal at the 2:51 mark.

He then came back with two more shutout periods and a 32-save effort Saturday evening, including 14 stops in the third period.

Dahlstrom, who ranks second in the WCHA and 15th nationally with a 2.10 goals-against average over 1,028:25 of action, has a 7-8-2 record and three shutouts

He’s also second in the league and 13th nationally with a .930 saves percentage.

Meanwhile Michigan Tech University’s Reid Sturos has been picked as the WCHA Rookie of the Week.

A forward, he contributed three points, five shots on goal and earned a plus-2 rating in a road series split at nationally-ranked Lake Superior State last weekend.
