Prep basketball: Marquette Redmen, Redettes debut as No. 1 in U.P. polls
MARQUETTE – With undefeated records thus far, both the Marquette Senior High School boys and girls basketball teams are ranked No. 1 in the first Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association poll of the 2013-14 season.
The MSHS boys (5-0) and girls (10-0) grabbed the top Class ABC sports in voting by select members of the UPSSA. Both gained 25 points as unanimous selections.
Trailing the Redmen of head coach Brad Nelson are the Negaunee Miners (5-1) – coached by Mike O’Donnell – with 20 points. Negaunee’s lone loss came to Marquette on Dec. 19, 51-40.
Ranked No. 5 are the Gwinn Modeltowners (3-1), who beat Norway 46-27 on Friday. Coach Darren Sinnaeve’s team collected three poll points.
Coach Jeff Olson’s Ishpeming Hematites, who have played just two games to date after having the start of their season postponed because of football, are an honorable mention pick with two points and a 2-0 mark.
In Class D, North Central (5-0) leads No. 2 Munising (4-0) – coached by Dan Waterman – by five poll points for the top spot. The two teams aren’t scheduled to meet until Feb. 17 at North Central.
In the girls balloting, the Redettes of coach Ben Smith picked up 25 poll points to 15 by runner-up Calumet (5-0) in Class ABC.
L’Anse (4-0) is ranked No. 4. Coach Shawn Hendrickson’s team collected 13 points.
In Class D, coach Greg Trowbridge’s Superior Central Cougars picked up one top vote and 21 poll points, but it wasn’t enough to unseat top-ranked Forest Park (7-0), which gained four No. 1 votes and 24 points.
Coach Matt Mattson’s Munising club (5-2) is an honorable mention pick with two points.
