Smoking banned near playground
ESCANABA – The controversy over whether to ban smoking at a new playground in Escanaba has been resolved.
The Escanaba City Council at Thursday’s meeting voted 3-1 to prohibit smoking at the new John D. Besse Park constructed last summer on the corner of 8th Avenue South and South 30th Street.
In November, when city administration was looking to apply city park rules to the new park – including no smoking within 100 feet of the playground – the council defeated the motion in a 3-2 vote.
After reviewing the issue again in December, the council agreed to vote on the issue again.
