Prep girls basketball: Ishpeming knocks off Norway for Mid-Peninsula Conference victory
ISHPEMING – Starting 2014 on the right track, the Ishpeming High School girls basketball team beat visiting Norway on Thursday night, 63-41, in a Mid-Peninsula Conference contest.
Jessica Spencer scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds to power the Hematites (4-1 overall, 2-0 M-PC). Teammate Kaylie Engler added 17 points.
“We wanted to keep a fast pace, play an uptempo game,” IHS head coach Tom Graves said. “We were able to get out on the break and transition into some good scoring opportunities.”
The Hematites led 17-13 after the first quarter, but outscored the Knights 35-19 the following two stanzas combined to take control.
“We settled down after the first quarter and our defense held them in check the rest of the way,” Graves said. “Our pressure defense was a factor.”
Jordan Kraemer led Norway with 20 points.
IHS won the junior varsity game, 30-25, in overtime.
