Prep boys basketball: Second half surge propels Mustangs to victory

MUNISING – Trailing Big Bay de Noc 26-22 at the half, Dan Waterman decided to “tweak” his team’s press.

“We made a couple of minor adjustments on the back end of our press,” the Munising High School head boys basketball coach said. “It was a minor tweak.”

It paid off handsomely, however, as the host Mustangs outscored the Black Bears 51-28 in the second half en route to a 73-54 Central U.P. League victory.

“The kids did a nice job answering the bell in the third quarter,” Waterman said, noting his club outscored Big Bay de Noc 30-8 in the stanza.

“We moved the ball well against their zone (defense). We did a nice job of spreading the ball around.”

The Mustangs (4-0 overall, 1-0 CUP) placed four players in double figures scoring-wise, led by Ben Stasewich with 28 points. Andy Cooper added 17, while Austin Kelto and Colin Immel notched 11 apiece.

Cole Potvin led the Black Bears (3-1, 2-1) with 19 points. Kaden Pelletier chipped in 10.

Munising won the JV game, 43-30.
