Robert Kenneth ‘Bob’ Hocking
YULEE, FL. – Mr. Robert Kenneth “Bob” Hocking, age 84, formerly of Yulee passed away on Saturday morning, December 21, 2013 at the home of his daughter in Fernandina Beach, FL.
Born in Ishpeming, Michigan, he was the oldest of three sons born to the late Raymond Josephus Stephen and Florence Ellen Treloar Hocking. Being raised in Ishpeming in the Upper Peninsula, he enjoyed the outdoors and time spent on his grandparent’s farm where he developed an interest in farming. He was a graduate of Ishpeming High School, Class of 1947. He loved Ishpeming and enjoyed returning home to visit family and friends.
After high school, Mr. Hocking enlisted in the United States Navy and served on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Roosevelt from October 1948 until October 1952 during the Korean Conflict. He met and married his wife, Ruth Marie Simpson, whose father was a Chief in the Navy, and began his family. Upon being honorably discharged from the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville he settled in rural Mandarin to begin his career in poultry management, running a turkey farm and later an egg farm in Orange Park.
Within a few years Mr. Hocking purchased an egg farm in Yulee and moved his family there. In later years he became a Manager for the Dixie Egg Company in Jacksonville.
Mr. Hocking remarried later in life and moved to Massachusetts. He returned to Northeast Florida in 2004, and moved to Osprey Village in Amelia Island in 2011.
His favorite hobby was macrame and he produced many beautiful pieces that have become treasured family keepsakes. He also enjoyed wood-working in his earlier years.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Ann Hocking, a son, Kenneth Raymond Hocking, a daughter, Teresa Marie Hocking, and a grandson, Jason David May. Mr. Hocking leaves behind three daughters, Shirley Lohman (Tom), Fernandina Beach, FL, Robin Marley (Dan), Fernandina Beach, FL, Shawn Parm (Rick), Thomaston, GA, two brothers, Ron Hocking (Judy), Ishpeming, MI, Roger Hocking (Jane), Bosque, NM, nine grandchildren, Mary Ellen Lohman, Dennis Robert Kennedy, Matthew Martin Kennedy, Justin Louis Marley, Blair Marie Marley, Andea Charlene Goolsby, Rebecca Marie Allen, Robert Nathan Jonjock, eleven great grandchildren, Nicole, Makayla, Mark, Noah, Briar Rose, Serena, Landon, Jude, Zachary, Kaitlin, Logan, two nieces, Judy and Laura, and one nephew, Raymond and his cousins. He also leaves behind his dear furry friend, Mitzy, a terrier mix rescue dog who was his constant companion and a great comfort to him in his later years.
Memorial services will be at a later date at the First Presbyterian Church in Fernandina Beach with Dr. Wain Wesberry and Dr. Doug Ganyo officiating.
