Prep girls basketball: Negaunee routs Iron Mountain for M-PC win
NEGAUNEE – The Negaunee girls’ basketball team concluded 2013 play on a high note with a 63-38 Mid-Peninsula Conference victory over Iron Mountain on Monday.
The Miners’ energy proved to be too much for the Mountaineers, who were unable to slow Negaunee’s momentum following a 46-27 first half for the Miners.
NHS maintained that comfortable lead throughout the game.
“These games during break are always hard, so I told them to come out strong from the start, get the crowd behind us and carry the momentum into the second half,” Negaunee coach Brandon Sager said.
Freshman Aleda Johnson led the Miners in points with 14, followed by juniors Courtney Clickner and Adena Anderson with 12 points apiece.
“Aleda is improving every day,” Sager said. “She’s listening to the things we’re talking about and correcting any little mistakes.”
On the defensive end, Johnson had five steals and junior Ashley Tresedder had four.
“Ashley’s kind of our defensive lockdown,” Sager said. “She’s embraced that role and she’s very athletic, so she creates a lot of havoc for other teams.”
Sager said the Miners look to sharpen their offense and continue to develop playing together as a team in 2014.
For Iron Mountain, junior Alyssa Khor led in points with 13, and junior Marti Pirkola had eight on the night.
The Mountaineers won the JV game with a score of 47-25.
