Kathryn Hawker

MARQUETTE, MI. – Kathryn Hawker, age 87, of Marquette, entered eternal life peacefully in her sleep Wednesday morning, December 18, 2013, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law in Stevens Point, Wisconsin while visiting for the holidays.

Kathryn was born December 1, 1926 in Ypsilanti, Michigan, the youngest child of Herman and Anna Marie (Braeutigam) Roehm. She was a graduate of the Ypsilanti High School class of 1944 and attended Eastern Michigan University.

On March 31, 1952 she married Daryl Landon Hawker. Daryl worked as an electrician on construction jobs and they lived for a time in Florida eventually settling in Dearborn, Michigan. In 1962 they moved to Marquette where they owned and operated Birch Grove Trailerville and Sales until 1979.

Kathryn was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and was active in the church’s Ruth Circle.

She looked forward to her time at Whitman, Graveraet, and Superior Hill schools serving as a library volunteer until 2012. And in her later years she truly enjoyed her multiple daily rides to Presque Isle, shopping trips around town, feeding the wildlife that came into her backyard and spending time with her family. Always strong willed and independent, she gave her family, neighbors, and friends great concern by continuing to climb ladders and other risky endeavors around her home until just recently.

Kathryn is survived by her children, Kay (Hector) Acevedo of Sterling, VA and Al (Lisa) Hawker of Stevens Point, WI. She is survived by and affectionately known as BeeMa to her grandchildren, Eric Hawker Young of Ann Arbor, MI, Brandon Hawker of Madison, WI, Jessica Hawker of Durham, NC, Andrew Hawker of Portland, OR, Angela (David) Caldwell of Sterling, VA, and Anthony (Jennifer) Acevedo of Bradford, NH. Also surviving are a sister, Marjorie Roehm of Saginaw, MI, several nieces and nephews, and numerous other relatives as well as her great-grand-dog, “Scruffy”.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Daryl in 1979 and a sister, Elizabeth (Roehm) Jackson in 1998.

The family will receive friends and relatives on Monday, December 30, 2013 at Redeemer Lutheran Church from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Pastor Steve Hulke will conduct Kathryn’s service at 2:00 p.m. at the church. Inurnment will be in Alban Cemetery in Ypsilanti, Michigan in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Kathryn’s memory be made to the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter (UPAWS), PO Box 968, Marquette MI 49855.
