Jean “Bernice” Korpi

ISHPEMING, MI – Jean “Bernice” Korpi, age 86 a life long resident of National Mine, was surrounded by her children as she entered eternal life on Tuesday, December 24, 2013 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility where she has been a resident for the past year-and-a-half.

Her family takes solace in knowing Bernice has finally been reunited with her beloved husband, Norman Korpi, who she has greatly missed for the last 48 years.

Bernice was born October 29, 1927, in National Mine to Olga & John Magnuson. She graduated from National Mine School in 1945. She married the love of her life, Norman Korpi on October 28, 1948, and together they had three children.

Bernice was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Ishpeming.

When Norman was tragically killed in 1965, Bernice began raising children on her own.

Throughout the years, in order to support her family, Bernice worked several jobs. She was a cook at the National Mine School, was employed at the National Mine Post Office, an office clerk for CCI main offices, and finally retired from Olson News in 1998.

Despite her struggles, Bernice never complained or burdened others with her problems. Instead she focused on what was important in life-her family, friends and church.

Bernice was well-known for her many talents. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and making rag carpets on her carpet loom.

Bernice was best baking in the kitchen, especially pies, rye bread, and cinnamon buns. She had many great times with her sister & brother-in-law Ruth & Gup Aho, brother and sister-in-law Fred & Teddy Magnuson and good friends, Betty and Marian.

Bernice held a strong sense of serving and giving to others. Her true calling was her devotion to her family. She built precious memories with her children & grandchildren, which will carry them through the loss of the matriarch of their family. When her four great grandsons arrived, they became the light of her life & she loved every moment she spent with them.

Bernice will be sorely missed by her surviving family: daughters Norma (Gary) Denney and Lois (Paul) Ombrello; son, John (Beverly) Korpi: grandchildren Karie (Todd) Belanger, Mary Denney, and Chad Korpi; great grandsons, Brenten and Carsen Belanger and Chase and Gage Norman Korpi; brother, Fred (Teddy) Magnuson; special niece Carol (Victor) Cox; special nephew Gene Aho, brothers-in-laws and sisters-in-law; Donna & Earl Knutson, Marlene Anderson, Ronald, Calvin and Roy Korpi and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death her parents, husband Norman Korpi, special sister & brother-in-law, Ruth and Gup Aho, and special sisters-in-law Marian Franti and Gail Korpi.

Bernice’s family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00am until 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 28, 2013 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Ishpeming where funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon with Rev. Dave Johnson officiating. Interment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Bernice’s family extent their gratitude to the entire staff at MCMCF. Every person at the facility surrounded Bernice with amazing care and compassion during the last 19 months of her life.
