LAKE LINDEN, MI. – Carl “Scuppy” W. Backstrom, 79, of Lake Linden MI died after a yearlong battle with cancer Sunday December 22, 2013 at The Omega House in Houghton, MI.
Carl was born April 11, 1934 in Calumet, Michigan to William and Martha (Palosaari) Backstrom. He graduated from Calumet High School and was awarded the George Gipp Memorial Award for outstanding athlete of the Class of ’52. Baseball was his passion and he had a storied career in the U.P. of Michigan and Minnesota until 1963. He graduated from Northern Michigan University in 1962.
Carl was a schoolteacher and coach at New York Mills, MN; Gladstone, MI; and Two Rivers, WI. He married Ardell Brasel (Amberg) in 1964 and they were married 21 years. He and Ardell owned and operated Big Pine Resort in Perham Minnesota from 1970-1975.
Carl retired from Baraga Prison as Recreation Coordinator and spent his retirement years in Calumet Michigan. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, fishing, attending sporting events, going to “camp”, and socializing with lifelong friends he formed while playing ball. He had an incredible memory and would tell many stories of his ball playing days. Carl was very proud of his children and their accomplishments.
He looked forward each year to spending time with his sons at the annual Gladstone Best ball Golf Tournament.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents Martha and William, infant brother Martin, and daughter Connie (Amberg) Trowbridge.
Carl is survived by his children Jeff Backstrom, Kristin (John) Greathouse, Dan Amberg (Buffy), and Randy Amberg; His grandchildren Jamie, Taylor, Josh, Tyler, AnnMarie, Derek, Justin, Karley and Kora; Brother John (Carole) Backstrom; Sister Lenore Seymour; And many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
There will be a private burial service and celebration of life gathering in Calumet Michigan at a later date.
