USOEC wrestling: Calovecchi just misses medaling
MARQUETTE – Former Marquette Senior High School wrestler Curt Calovecchi just missed medaling while representing the U.S. Olympic Education Center in Greco-Roman wrestling at the Minnesota Storm Holiday Cup tournament on Friday in Rochester, Minn.
Five other USOEC wrestlers won medals at the event – gold went to Kendrick Sanders of Homestead, Fla., in the 74-kilogram weight class; silver to Isaiah Varona of Miami at 55 kg and Sammy Jones of Folsom, La., at 60 kg; and bronze to Kyndall Rutz of Englewod, Colo., at 55 kg and Barrett Stanghill of Philipsburg, Mont., at 74 kg.
Calovecchi, who was entered at 84 kg, was among a quartet of USOEC wrestlers to place fourth, which also included Alec Noa of Lombard, Ill., at 55 kg; Dillon Cowan of Harvard, Ill., at 74 kg; and Khymba Johnson of Sacramento, Calif., at 96 kg.
Former USOEC athlete and two-time Olympian Spenser Mango of St. Louis won a gold medal at 60 kg.
Thirty teams sent wrestlers to compete.
