Prep football: Ishpeming QB Briones verbally commits to Central Michigan

MARQUETTE – Ishpeming High School senior quarterback Alex Briones confirmed Thursday night via Twitter he has verbally committed to play football for Central Michigan University in the fall of 2014 after leading the Hematites to back-to-back MHSAA Division 7 state football championships.

As a 6-foot-2, 215-pound senior on the IHS football team this fall, Briones was named the Upper Peninsula Large Schools Offensive Player of the Year by the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. He was also named to the 2013 Associated Press Division 7-8 all-state first team as a quarterback.

Briones, who had been heavily pursued over the years by NCAA Division II Northern Michigan University, ran for 60 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries in this year’s state title win over Detroit Loyola at Ford Field in Detroit. He also completed 6 of 13 passes for 76 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, he made six tackles, including four solos, as linebacker in the championship.

The Chippewas are coming off a 6-6 season with a 5-3 record in the Mid-American Conference, finishing tied for third in the West Division and tied for fifth overall in the league.

The official signing period for football – other than mid-year junior college transfers – begins Feb. 5. Briones is unable to sign a National Letter of Intent until then.
