MSU College of Human Medicine names Mazzuchi Scholarship winners
Four medical students from the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine Upper Peninsula Region were recently honored with the Mazzuchi Scholarship to help offset their medical school expenses. Students Kurt Bjorkman, Sarah Bjorkman, Stephanie Rutterbush and Eric Sturos were each awarded $7,500 toward their medical school loans. Recipients are determined by three criteria: interest in practicing in the Upper Peninsula once done with residency training; interest in specializing in emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, general surgery, hospitalist medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics or psychiatry; and need for financial assistance. The scholarship fund, which began providing financial assistance to MSU College of Human Medicine students in 1983, was renamed the Mazzuchi Scholarship in 2006 in honor of retired local physician Dr. Dan Mazzuchi. Dr. Mazzuchi served as Michigan State University College of Human Medicine Assistant Dean and chief executive officer of the Upper Peninsula Health Education Corporation (now Michigan State University College of Human Medicine Upper Peninsula Region). He also helped launch the Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program, served as chief of staff at Marquette General and practiced nephrology and internal medicine.
