Prep wrestling: Marquette goes 5-0 at Westwood Super Dual

ISHPEMING – With five wrestlers all going 5-0 on the day, the Marquette Senior High School wrestling team dominated the Westwood Super Dual Tournament Saturday in Ishpeming.

The Redmen of head coach Tony Gentz won all five of their matches on the day by scores of 51-15 over Escanaba; 48-18 over Iron Mountain; 65-6 over Gwinn; 66-6 over Negaunee; and 46-24 over Westwood.

“We did better than expected,” Gentz said. “I thought we would have a good chance to compete … but the kids really stepped up.”

The five undefeated Redmen were, Brian Helmer, 152 pounds, including two pins and a tech fall; Beau Caster, 135, with four pins; Rick Baker, 171, including three pins; Jackson Mahler, 189, with four pins; and Per Rahm, 215, including four pins.

“The key match of the day for us was when Caster wrestled an Iron Mountain kid,” Gentz said. “Beau’s a freshman and managed to pull out a 7-65 victory in overtime.

Gentz added Helmer also beat an IM wrestler, 4-2, in an extra session.

Host Westwood went 3-2 on the day, losing to Escanaba, 42-30, besides falling to MSHS. The Patriots beat Gwinn, 48-18; Negaunee 48-24; and IM, 42-27.

Josh Argall at 160 went 5-0 on the day for the Patriots, including two pins.

“We went into (the tournament) with a few injuries and came out better than I expected,” Westwood head coach Dan Carlson said.

He noted Brett Rautio went 4-1 for Westwood, with three of those wins coming on pins.

For IM, Alex Edwards (125), Jared Gauthier (130) and Aaron Bolo (145) all went undefeated in the tourney.

Gwinn’s Alex Anderson (no weight listed) also went 5-0.

Other team scores in the tourney were:

Escanaba: 48-18 over Gwinn; 36-36 with IM; 54-18 over Negaunee.

Iron Mountain: 36-30 over Negaunee; 42-12 over Gwinn.

Negaunee: 36-15 over Gwinn.
