Prep girls hoop: Superior Central claws past Munising with fast start for CUP win

MUNISING – Outscored 19-5 in the third quarter, the Munising High School girls basketball team dropped a 58-32 Central U.P. League decision to visiting Superior Central on Wednesday night.

“We led 15-2 in the first quarter, then they slowly started catching up,” said Cougars’ coach Greg Trowbridge. “We settled down a little at halftime and went to a zone. They do a good job driving to the basket, but we were able to take that away from them in the second half. The girls played pretty well overall.”

The Mustangs (2-1, 0-1 CUP) trailed just 28-20 at the half before the Cougars (4-0, 3-0) went on their third quarter offensive surge.

“They came out hard (after the half),” Munising head coach Matt Mattson said. “They were fresher than we were.

“We also had too many turnovers and didn’t box out well (on the boards).”

Vanessa Freberg paced SC with 22 points and six steals. Teammate Molly Swajanen added 12 and Teslyn Tyner tossed in 11 points, six assists and five steals. Brooke Pasanen also collected five steals.

Frankie Mattson led the Mustangs with nine points and six rebounds.

“We battled, but (SC) is a very good basketball team,” Matt Mattson said. “They pressed us at times, and we didn’t handle that well. We didn’t rebound well, either.”

Munising won the junior varsity game, 51-35.
