Carol Jean Liubakka

MARQUETTE, MI. – Carol Jean Liubakka, 70, a Marquette resident, joined her husband in entered eternal life on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at Mather Nursing Center.

Carol was born January 18, 1943 in Ishpeming, a daughter of Clarence L. and Olive H. (Watters) Huot, and was raised in Ishpeming. In August 1960, she married Floyd Durand and the couple began to establish their home and raise a family in Harvey. During this time, Carol worked at the former Bunny Bread Baking Company for eight years. In October 1968, she married Donald H. “Old Lew” Liubakka, in whom she found not only her soul mate, but her best friend. Carol would complete her high school education by returning to Marquette Senior High School, with Don, to receive their high school diplomas in 1973 through the Adult Education Program.

Carol was employed for 30 years at Northern Michigan University in the Food Service Department, first as a cook and later supervising the restaurants on campus. Carol retired from NMU in August 1998. After retirement Don and Carol enjoyed spending Michigan winters in Florida, where they made many new winter friends.

Don and Carol spent many years as the campground hosts at Indian Lake State Campground in Manistique and especially enjoyed the numerous camping trips spent with their family sitting around the campfire.

Don preceded Carol in death on December 16, 2001, in Florida, after 34 years of marriage, and Carol returned to reside in Marquette year round.

Carol was a member of St. Louis the King Catholic Church in Harvey.

A loving and devoted mother,proud grandparent, daughter, and sister, Carol is survived by her daughter, Cindy (Ira) Bowen of Milwaukee, WI; a son, Brian (Nicole) Durand of Harvey; her grandchildren, Jessica and Jodie Virta, Sheena (Brent) Zaborowske, Courtney (Jason) Beecher, Paige, and Casey Durand, and Ira Bowen III; great-grandchildren, Haqiah Phillips and Raziya Phillips, Kenadee Beecher and Marley Zaborowske; a sister, Claire Brewer of Gwinn; a brother, Dr. Sam Huot of Rapid City, SD; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Carol was preceded in death by her father, Clarence Huot; mother, Olive Huot, former husband, Floyd Durand; and husband, Donald Liubakka, sister-in-law, Lizann Huot; and brother-in-law, George Brewer.
