James A. ‘Jimmy’ Voet
WESTLAND, MI. – James A. “Jimmy” Voet, age 12, of Westland, MI passed away on Monday, December 2, 2013 at his home while in the loving care of his family and the Angela Hospice, following a lifelong battle with cerebral palsy.
Jimmy was born December 26, 2000 in Ishpeming, MI the son of Joseph and Jeanne (Honkala) Voet. His struggle for life began at his birth and took him to Wisconsin Children’s Hospital where he spent his first months. Jimmy made it back to Ishpeming with his parents, and in 2002 moved to Westland, MI where he had resided until this time.
Jimmy attended the Cooke Special Needs Center Program in Northville, MI since age 3, always looking forward to going to school. Being blind, Jimmy had a special love for music, and he enjoyed attending his brother Rocco’s orchestra concerts.
Survivors include his parents Joseph and Jeanne (nee Honkala) Voet of Westland, brother Rocco of Westland, maternal grandmother Kathleen (nee Gelmi) Honkala of Zephyrhills, FL, paternal grandparents Ed and Phyllis (nee DePetro) Voet of Marquette, aunts and uncles Jodi and Al Firby of Ishpeming, Gina and Wes Mutch of Marquette, Linda and Dan Santiago of Haslet, TX and Donna Voet and Bob Dagenais of Marquette, special great uncle and great aunt Joe and Kathy Gelmi of Racine, WI, along with several other great uncles, great aunts, cousins and the caring staffs of the Cooke School and Angela Hospice.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather James “Jimm” Honkala.
Jimmy’s family will greet relatives and friends from 11:00am 1:00pm on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 1:00pm on Saturday at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Scott Lindenberg to officiate. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
