Aili Violet Maki

NEGAUNEE, MI. – Aili Violet Maki, 92, formerly of 98 Croix St., Negaunee died at 6:40 pm on Monday, December 2, 2013 at the Mather Nursing Center where she had resided since May of 2008.

Aili was born September 18, 1921 in Rock to Andrew and Ida (Hongisto) Maki and attended the Rock schools. She was a Negaunee resident since 1951. Following her husband’s retirement in 1974, the couple spent 9 years assisting at Bay Cliff Health Camp, Aili in the laundry department and Eino as the head of maintenance.

Mrs. Maki was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Negaunee. She loved cooking for family and friends, especially on Sunday afternoons.

She was an avid reader, greatly enjoyed wildlife, feeding the birds and chipmunks, and spending time at the family camp on Lake Superior.

Surviving are 2 daughters: Sandra Maki and Janice (John, Sr.) Eman, both of Negaunee, 7 grandchildren: Becky (Robert) Fox of Negaunee, Candice (Michael McGee) Lampi of Santa Barbara, CA, Jill (Aaron) Rogers of Bloomington, IN, Sean Eman of Detroit, John (Susan) Eman, Jr., of Negaunee, Tracy (Justin) McPeck of Hudsonville, Ecko (Tanner) Popps of Ishpeming, 8 great grandchildren: Kadin and Maija Fox, Kara and Josh Rogers, Ian and Brooke McPeck, Ebeny and Si Popps, one sister, Elsie Raines of El Monte, CA, numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Eino Maki in 2003, her daughter Kathleen Lampi in 1994 and son-in-law Robert Lampi in 2013, a great granddaughter, Riley McPeck in 2007, a sister, Vivian Leiviska, and brother, Eino Maki.

A memorial service will be held this summer at a date and place to be announced by the Koskey Funeral Home. The family gives special thanks to the staff at the Mather Nursing Center for their loving and compassionate care given to Aili over the past years.
