Prep girls hoops: Marquette routs Gwinn to open season

MARQUETTE – Outscoring visiting Gwinn 26-5 in the second quarter, the Marquette Senior High School girls basketball team went on to post a 61-30 non-conference win Monday night in the first game of the season for both schools.

Hunter Viitala and Maddie Connon scored 11 points apiece and Casey Durand added nine for the Redettes, who saw nine players make the scorecard.

Morgan Leadbetter hauled in a game-high 12 rebounds for MSHS.

“Gwinn played us on even terms in the first quarter,” MSHS head coach Ben Smith said. “Then, we settled in and had really good second and third quarters.

“Viitala had eight steals and (Shayla) Huebner got after the ball, too. Our defense changed the dynamic of the game.”

Tori Lauren and Ellie Olsen knocked down 13 points apiece for Gwinn, which had only three players score. Lauren added six rebounds.
