Benjamin C. Hassenger
ISHPEMING, MI. – Benjamin C. Hassenger, age 88 of 179 Deer Lake Rd. Ishpeming, passed away Thursday, November 28, 2013 at his home while in the loving care of his family and UP Home Health & Hospice.
Benjamin was born April 21, 1925 in Negaunee to Benjamin H. & Eleanore (Zryd) Hassenger. He graduated from Ishpeming High School, class of 1943. Ben served his country in the United States Marine Corps serving during World War II in the Central Pacific. He attended Northern Michigan University and received his Masters’ Degree from Michigan State University. Ben worked as a school teacher and school social worker for the Lansing School District from 1954 until his retirement in 1983.
Ben was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Ishpeming where he served as a Deacon, sang in the choir and belonged to the Presbyterian Men’s Club and was a former member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lansing where he was an Elder. He was also a member of the Michigan Association for Children with Emotional Disorders, Great Lansing Association of Retired School Personnel, life member of National Education Association, Marquette County Association of Retired School Personnel, Northern Michigan University and Michigan State University Alumni Associations and Peninsula Arts Appreciation Council. Some of Ben’s interests include music, theater, history and photography.
Ben is survived by his wife Patricia (Pickelmann) Hassenger, 2 children: Benjamin K. of Okemos, MI and Pamela of Ishpeming, 5 grandchildren: Benjamin, Antonio, Nicholas, Laurel and Robert and 2 great-grandchildren, Mia and Nolan. He is also survived by his sister Barbara (Larry) Nault of Basking Ridge, NJ along with nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents Benjamin H. and Eleanore Hassenger.
A memorial service will be held 1:00pm Thursday, December 5th at the United Presbyterian Church, 112 E. Euclid St. Ishpeming with Pastor Mary Kelly officiating.
The family will greet relatives and friends at the church on Thursday from 12:30pm until the time of service at 1:00pm.
The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 380 will accord Military Honors.
Memorials may be directed to the United Presbyterian Church or a charity of ones choice in memory of Ben Hassenger.
