American Legion Bantam AA skaters sweep foes

MARQUETTE – A pair of wins Nov. 24 over the visiting Sault Ste. Marie Bantam AA hockey team, 7-1 and 9-3, gave the Marquette American Legion Bantam AA skaters a sweep of weekend action.

A day earlier, Legion (24-4-1) beat the (Houghton-Hancock) Copper Country Bantam AA squad, 13-1 and 5-2, in non-league games.

In its first contest against the Soo, Legion got three goals from Justin Hendrickson. Spencer DenBeste, Nick Bink, Ryan Morrissey and Alec Gadzinski added single markers.

Marquette skaters recording assists were Colin Gaffney (2), Hunter Doucette (2), Shane Ring (3), Bink, Joey Phillips, Ethan Jones and DenBeste.

Goaltender Dylan Sibilsky made four saves.

In the second NIHL contest, Gaffney notched a hat trick and Doucette chipped in two markers. Bink, Ring, Phillips and Doucette also scored.

Collecting assists were Phillips, Justin Moyle (2), Hendrickson, Spencer Samppala, Gavin Schwalbach, Ring (3), Gaffney, Morrissey (2), Bink and Andrew Pieper.

Luke McCarthy came up with 22 stops for Marquette.

In Legion’s 13-1 rout of the Copper Country, Morrissey (2), Phillips (2), Bink, Gaffney (2), Gadzinski, Hendrickson, Doucette (2), Branden Woodward and Moyle tallied for the winners.

Picking up helpers were Phillips (2), Ring, DenBeste (7), Doucette, Gaffney, Gadzinski (2), Morrissey, Hendrickson (3), Bink and Samppala.

Sibilsky made eight saves.

In the second contest, Bink tallied three goals. Gaffney and Moyle contributed one apiece.

Picking up assists were DenBeste (2), Gadzinski, Moyle, Phillips, Jones and Samppala.

McCarthy turned aside 13 shots on goal.

U14 girls bow twice

The Wells Fargo U14 girls hockey team of Marquette dropped a pair of games to the visiting Algoma (Ontario, Canada) Hawks over the weekend, 4-1 and 4-0.

Lexi Anderson scored the lone Marquette goal, assisted by Julia Johnson.

Briana Holman made 19 saves in net for Marquette in each game.
