Lawrence E. Warner

CHAMPION, MI. – Lawrence E. Warner, age 95, longtime Champion resident passed away Sunday, November 17, 2013 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette where he has been a resident since 2008.

Lawrence was born July 13, 1918 in Champion to Gus & Donna (Harsh) Warner. He attended Champion Schools and enlisted in the United States Army-Air Force in 1941. He served as a medical and surgical technician with an honorable discharge in 1945.

Lawrence worked for Bud Wheel Manufacture in Detroit for 5 years then worked for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company. He began underground mining at the Lloyd and Mather B Mines later working at the Humboldt and Tilden Mines working as a pocket man, retiring in 1979.

Lawrence was a master gardener, who also enjoyed berry picking, fishing and hunting. He enjoyed spending Friday nights at the German Club listening to music and dancing. He was a former member of the Champion American Legion now the Greenwood American Legion. He spent his winters in Tampa, FL form 1979-2007 and loved to travel.

Lawrence is survived by 2 children: Marty (Rae) Warner of Negaunee and Larry (Ruth) Warner of Michigamme, a brother Thomas Warner of Humboldt, 2 grandchildren: Tracey Halama of Long Grove, IL and Melissa (Dan) Grochowski of Michigamme, 5 great grandchildren: Chloe, Allyana and Isabelle Grochowski, Marina & Sienna Halama, brothers in law: Nels (Elizabeth) Paavola of Diorite and Jim Wuebben of Dayton, OH, sister in law Rose Warner of Ishpeming, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Phyllis, second wife Aili, 6 brothers and 2 sisters.

Lawrence’s family will greet relatives and friends from 2:00-4:00pm Tuesday November 26th at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming where a memorial service will be held at 4:00pm with Pastor Renee Grochowski officiating.

A luncheon will be held at the Mitchell United Methodist Church in Negaunee following the service.

Memorials may be directed to the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans Activity Fund in memory of Lawrence.
