MSHS athletes Viitala, Apple, Burmeister cited

MARQUETTE – Volleyball player Hunter Viitala, as well as football players Kurt Burmeister and Gabe Apple, have been named the Marquette Senior High School Athletes of the Month for October by the Superiorland Kiwanis Club.

A junior, Viitala served as a team captain and gained a spot on the All-Great Northern Conference First Team.

She also plays basketball and runs track for MSHS.

Her honors include being named to the All-Upper Peninsula Dream Team and the GNC Player of the Year in basketball, as well as being the U.P. champion in the 1600 relay, the high jump and the 800 relay in track/field.

A 3.3 GPA student, Viitala has volunteered as an elementary school basketball coach, at the Bowl For Kids Sake event and as a 5-kilometer charity race runner.

Her parents are Darrin and Theresa Viitala.

Apple was named to the GNC First Team as a linebacker. He was presented the Lou Carlson Award for his leadership and sportsmanship for the MSHS football team.

A senior, has also been a member of the Marquette baseball and hockey teams.

Apple has volunteered for projects through the National Honor Society, as well as the Marquette Marathon.

His parents are Michael and Laura Apple.

Senior Burmeister is also being honored for football. He earned All-GNC and All-U.P. honors as an end this past season. He has also played basketball and participated in track for the Redmen.

He’s a 3.5 GPA student who has earned Academic Achievement nods all three years at MSHS.

Burmeister has helped set up – and clean up – at Marquette food fests. He plans to go into sports medicine and possibly become an orthopedic surgeon down the road.

His parents are Kent and Rosemary Smith.
