Driving for winter coats

CALUMET – For the seventh year, New Beginnings Angel Mission Free Store is conducting its annual winter coat giveaway, and more coats are needed for the store’s next giveaway.

Terry Bazin, store co-director, said there is a serious need for infant, child and men’s coats, as well as snow pants for all ages.

“We’re low on men’s coats, we’re low on snowpants,” she said.

Snow pants for all ages are very popular during the giveaways, Bazin said.

“They go first because we don’t get a lot of them,” she said.

The coat giveaways on Oct. 26 and Nov. 2, were very successful, Bazin said.

“Within a week, we gave away almost 200 coats,” she said.

The Free Store also gives away boots, hats and gloves, Bazin said.

For the first time, besides the Free Store location at 112 Fifth St. in Calumet, Bazin said there will be drop-off boxes for clean slightly used or new coats and other winter clothing at radio station WMPL in Hancock, the Daily Mining Gazette and Portage Lake United Church in Houghton, and River Valley Bank in Calumet.

The hours of the Free Store are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday.

Bazin said the coat and winter clothing giveaways are gaining in popularity.

“It’s been going tremendously well, and it’s been increasing every year,” she said.
