Legion goes 2-3 in hockey tourney
MARQUETTE – In a trip to Duluth, Minn., Nov. 8-10, the Marquette American Legion Bantam AA hockey team went 2-3 at the Tommy Williams Invitational Tournament.
“We learned a lot about ourselves, what it takes to play at that high level,” Legion head coach Brian Nebel said, “and what we still need to get better at.”
In their first game in preliminary round play, the local skaters lost to the Duluth East Hounds, 6-5, in a shootout.
Spencer DenBeste scored four goals and Nick Bink added a single marker for Legion, which led 3-1 early in the second period.
Drawing assists were Alec Gadzinski (3), Justin Moyle (2), Justin Hendrickson, Bink (3) and Spencer Samppala.
Luke McCarthy made 35 saves in net for Marquette.
Legion then lost to the Osseo Maple Grove Crimson, 6-0. Marquette goalie Dylan Sibilsky turned aside 18 shots on net.
In their third game, the local skaters blanked the Rochester Red, 6-0, behind 15 saves by McCarthy.
DenBeste and Bink led the way offensively with two markers each. Shane Ring and Gadzinski also scored.
Collecting assists were Bink (3), Joey Phillips, Samppala, Colin Gaffney (2), Ring, Aydin Frost, Hendrickson and Hunter Doucette.
In the consolation bracket, Legion dropped a 6-3 decision to the White Bear Lake Bears.
Phillips, Bink and Ring found the back of the net for Legion. Earning helpers were Doucette, Hendrickson, Bink and DenBeste.
Sibilsky and McCarthy combined to make 28 stops.
In their final game of the weekend, the Legion skaters shut out Rochester Red, 6-0, behind three goals by Bink and two by Ring. Hendrickson added a single tally.
DenBeste (3), Gavin Schwalbach (3), Doucette, Branden Woodward, Phillips, Bink and Samppala picked up assists.
McCarthy came up with 13 stops in net.
