Man falls to death at national lakeshore

MUNISING – Rangers at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore are investigating the death of a 24-year-old man who fell from the top of Miners Falls early Monday morning.

The names of those involved were not being released today.

Alger County Sheriff’s deputies received a 911 call at 4:45 a.m. Monday reporting the fall from the 50-foot falls, located on the east end of the park, along the Miners River.

Several agencies responded to the scene.

“When we got there, there was a subject lying at the bottom of the falls,” said Alger County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Matt Waldron.

Waldron deferred further inquiries to the park service, which is the primary agency investigating the incident.

Park staff said rangers were unavailable for comment before press time today.

Waldron said two males were camping at the top of the falls, which is against park rules. The two men woke up and were cold and began to start fire.

One of the men then slipped and fell to the bottom of the falls, Waldron said.

The man’s camping companion made it out to call 911 dispatchers, Waldron said.

The man who fell was later pronounced dead at Munising Memorial Hospital in Munising.
