Muriel Beth Rivard
MARQUETTE, MI. – Muriel Beth Rivard, age 75, of Marquette, entered eternal life Saturday, November 9, 2013, at her home, in the loving, comforting care of her family and caregivers with Lake Superior Hospice.
Born March 16, 1938 in Marquette, to Steven and Ruth (Carlstrom) Johnson, Muriel was raised in Marquette and graduated from Graveraet High School in 1956.
She attended St. Luke’s School of Nursing for one year, during which time she met Don Joseph Rivard. The couple was married June 21, 1958 and together established a home and began raising their family in Marquette.
Muriel held several jobs during her career, working at J.C Penny in bookkeeping and as an office manager for Universal Hospital Services. She and Don co-owned Big Al’s Full House Restaurant for ten years, Muriel was the manager who oversaw the day to day operations.
With Muriel, family always came first and, during retirement, she volunteered at her son, Steve’s, restaurant and was always a big help to her daughters when they began raising their own families. She stayed very active in the lives of her grandchildren.
Muriel loved animals and the family always had cats and dogs. She also had a fondness for birds, manatees, and pandas. In her spare time, Muriel was an avid reader, involved in a bridge club, enjoyed playing cribbage, solitaire, and working the Saturday Mining Journal crossword puzzle with her friend, Jackie. She enjoyed gardening and plants, her favorite being the Hoya Plant. She liked sports, her favorite team being the Detroit Tigers, she also spent many years in bowling leagues with her daughter, Susan, and went on many bowling trips. She was very patriotic and active in the Marquette League of Women Voters and assisted at many elections. She was also a strong supporter of the Marquette Humane Society.
Muriel is survived by her husband of 55 years, Don Joseph; her children, Susan (Jon) Christensen and Julie (Robert) Mingay both of Marquette, and Steve Rivard of Myrtle Beach, SC; her grandchildren, Sally Jo Sanderson and Travis Christensen; a sister, Janet Penhale of Negaunee; special friend, Jackie Heitman; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her cat of 20 years, Zoe.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Alice Jean and Dorothy Johnson.
Friends may call at the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 13, from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm. Services will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday beginning at 1:00 pm with Rev. Amanda Kossow officiating.
Burial will be made in the Park Cemetery.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Lake Superior Hospice, U.P Home Health and Hospice, and Arcadia Health, especially Kelly, Brenda, Kaycee, Katie, Julie, Carol and Laura, for they all provided the gift of being able to keep Muriel at home.
