World War II vets laid to rest

ISHPEMING – Two World War II veterans were laid to rest Monday at the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Iner Swanson of the U.S. Army 40th Engineer Battalion passed away Dec. 31, and Robert E. Swanson of the U.S. Army Air Corps followed just six days later, on Jan. 5.

Both men grew up in Ishpeming and were inducted into the Army in 1942, only weeks apart.

Lois Swanson, Robert’s sister and Iner’s wife, also of Ishpeming, passed away Oct. 29 and was interred at the same time as the two men.

“Both Robert and Iner just loved their experience in the military,” said Robert Swanson, the son of Iner and Lois.

Honor guards from both the Army and the Air Force were present for the ceremony.

Swanson said they waited to have the ceremony for all three loved ones at the same time so that more family members could attend.

About a dozen members of the family were able to make the trip, most of them from downstate.
