State Christmas tree to be cut

IRON RIVER – The 2013 state Christmas tree will be harvested at 10 a.m. EST Wednesday in Iron River for its 460-mile journey to the lawn of the Capitol in Lansing.

Donated by Jonny and Barbara Waara of Iron River and selected by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget, the 68-foot blue spruce will be cut down following a short ceremony at 123 W. Maple St. in Iron River.

The tree will be transported by the Michigan Association of Timbermen and the Great Lakes Timber Professionals Association at no cost to the state.

Jonny Waara is originally from Palmer and is a graduate of Negaunee High School.
