Robert M. “Slick” Durand
HARVEY, MI. – Robert Michael “Slick” Durand, age 62, of 29 Silver Creek Drive, Marquette, entered eternal life Sunday, October 27, 2013, at his home, in the loving, comforting care of his family and the caregivers of UP Home Health and Hospice.
Born April 23, 1951 in Marquette, a son of Leonard A. and Lydia L. (Just) Durand, Sr., Slick grew up in the Harvey area and began his working career with Cliff Dow in Marquette. He married the former Lois Irene Quayle at St. Christopher Catholic Church and together the couple established their home in Harvey and raised their family there. Slick was employed with Wickes Lumber Company in Skandia for many years and then with Pro Build when the company moved to Marquette. When he retired in 2011, due to ill health, he had completed over 43 years of service to the company, during a career in which he served as yardman, loaded and drove trucks, plowed snow in winter, and was, in general, a jack of all trades for the company. An avid outdoorsman, Slick enjoyed his camp on Helen Lake, especially times spent with his grandchildren when he could share his love of fishing, including attending numerous fishing derbies on Helen Lake, and those special times of 4 wheeling with the grandkids over to Silver Lake for double dip ice cream. Slick was skilled at woodworking, built the family home, enjoyed cooking on the grill for family and friends, was a deer hunter his whole life, was an enthusiastic Packer and Red Wing fan, liked country music, and usually did most of this while enjoying a Pabst Blue Ribbon. For many years, Slick was a volunteer firefighter with the Sands Township Volunteer Fire Department.
Robert is survived by his wife, Lois: daughters, Glenda (Josh) Weigner of Green Bay, WI, Gail (Ed) Goedert of Marquette, and Carolyn (Chad) Boase of Negaunee; 8 grandchildren, Scott and Hailey LaJeunesse, Nathan, MacKenzie, and Zachary Weigner, Kalob Reynolds, Kelsie and Katalina Boase; his sister, Lorraine Poole of Harvey; sister-in-law, Lois Durand of Ishpeming; and special friend and hunting companion, William Malmborg of Green Bay, WI; many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Slick was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Alyssa Weigner; sisters, Geraldine (the late, Jack) Croschere, Gloria (the late, Roger) Kivi; and brothers, Leonard Durand, Jr and Floyd Durand.
Services will be held at St. Christopher Catholic Church on Saturday, November 9, and will be announced.
