Prep football: Ishpeming, Negaunee, Munising finish ranked in final UPSSA polls
MARQUETTE – Superiorland teams Ishpeming, Negaunee and Munising made the top 5 in the final Upper Peninsula prep football poll of the season.
Ishpeming (9-0) picked up two No. 1 votes and 22 poll points from select members of the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association, but it wasn’t enough to unseat Menominee for the top spot in the Big Five balloting.
The Maroons, also 9-0, collected three No. 1 votes and 23 poll points. Negaunee (8-1), meanwhile, finished third with 14 points.
In the final Michigan Associated Press state-wide poll, Ishpeming completed a wire-to-wire run as the unanimous No. 1 team in Division 7, receiving all five first place votes in every poll released this season.
Negaunee closed the year ranked No. 7 in the state’s Division 6 poll.
Ishpeming will host Mancelona at 1 p.m. Saturday in a Division 7 contest in the first round of the MHSAA playoffs, while Negaunee will entertain Indian River Inland Lakes at 1 p.m. Saturday in a Division 6 game.
Marquette (5-3), which will face host Midland at 1 p.m. Saturday in Division 2 playoff action, gained an honorable mention poll spot with one point.
Munising, which guaranteed itself a playoff berth with a 17-10 victory over L’Anse Friday, is ranked No. 5 in the Little Five with five points.
The Mustangs will play at 7 p.m. Friday at North Central in postseason play.
