NHS football team pitches in to move food pantry

NEGAUNEE – The Negaunee St. Vincent de Paul food pantry moved to a different location in the Negaunee Mall building Saturday, thanks to the Negaunee High School Miners football team.

The NHS varsity football team showed up at the mall at 10 a.m. Saturday to lend a helping hand hauling boxes of food, medical equipment and furniture from the pantry’s old location, accessible on the east side of the mall building, to its new location on the bottom floor of the building’s south side.

“This is their workout today,” said St. Vincent de Paul member Shannon Vilona, whose son Brandon is on the football team. “Instead of going on the field, this is their workout. If they didn’t come, they had to run. And they were all excited to come,” she said.

The Negaunee Mall building recently came under new ownership and Vilona said the owner wanted to use the space that the pantry previously occupied.

“The new owner wants this area, so we are back below around the mall in the rear entrance,” she said.

Vilona, who said she and her father have been members of St. Vincent de Paul Society for more than 30 years, stressed that the new location won’t hinder the food pantry from continuing to do important work in the local community.

“We help people who need help around here,” she said. “They get groceries, they get help with their utilities – some need help with medical expenses – anything, any need.”
