Prep volleyball: Gwinn clinches share of Mid-Peninsula Conference title

IRON MOUNTAIN – Gwinn clinched at least a share of the Mid-Peninsula Conference volleyball title Tuesday with a three-set 25-19, 25-21, 25-23 victory over Iron Mountain.

“My girls were just aggressive with the ball,” Modeltowners coach Stephanie Bahrman said. “Iron Mountain was tipping a lot for short kills. We covered the middle of the court real well.”

Gwinn’s Katie Aho collected 13 kills, 10 digs and three aces. Ellie Olsen had nine kills and 11 digs; Ashley Childs totaled 16 digs; Bella Wedig had six kills; and Chelsea Moton finished with eight kills.

Gwinn, owning a 9-1 MPC record with two league matches remaining, visits Ishpeming on Tuesday. Bahrman said Manistique and Negaunee share second place in the MPC with three losses each.

Iron Mountain (5-5) hosts Ishpeming on Thursday.

Redettes sweep Braves

MARQUETTE – Coach Mike Morgan and his Marquette Senior High School volleyball Redettes celebrated Senior Night with a three-set 25-20, 25-20, 25-22 win over visiting Gladstone Tuesday night.

“The girls stepped onto the court ready to play and did not let up until the match was finished,” Morgan said. “The emotion of Senior Night helped elevate our play, especially on defense.”

Courtney McGovern led the Redettes with 19 assists and two service aces. Tyler Smith recorded three blocks and nine kills, while MSHS teammate Hunter Viitala came up with 11 kills and 19 digs.

The Redettes’ Martha Storm contributed two aces with, but two errors on 18 total serves, Morgan said.

“If we can carry this level of intensity through our next two matches and into district tournament play, we’re positioned to continue to have success,” the coach said.

The MSHS JV team beat Gladstone, 2-0 (25-17, 25-15).
