Hearing set on trap net rules
MADISON, Wis. (AP) – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources wants input on new Lake Superior commercial fishing trap net rules.
Currently, commercial fishing operations can place nets in what’s known as the restricted use area during the summer. DNR officials said use of trap nets in the area creates safety risks for boaters.
The new rules would limit a single trap net per commercial license in the area, exclude nets from a so-called zone of safe passage through the area.
The DNR has set a public hearing on the rules for Nov. 7 in Bayfield.
