Edwin “Matt” G. Nelson

EBEN JUNCTION, MI. – On October 19, 2013 a beautiful rainbow appeared over Lake Superior in Marquette, Michigan at the very same time Edwin “Matt” G. Nelson, age 82, passed away at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans. He had resided there since February 29, 2012 when the cruel disease, Alzheimer’s, had taken over.

Edwin was born on March 31, 1931 in Rumely, Michigan to the late Richard and Sylvia (Aho) Nelson. In 1952 he was drafted into the United States Marine Corps and served for two years in California before being Honorably Discharged. He had worked various jobs, starting at the Cambria-Jackson Mine in Negaunee, then working for Pierson Construction for two years building Interstate 75 from St. Ignace South, and then as a truck driver for Cleveland Cliffs and retired from the Empire Mine in 1991. On September 22, 1956 Edwin married Carolyn D. Johnson, and together they raised their two daughters. He enjoyed collecting cars, both life size and models, and could often be found in garage tinkering on a vehicle. Edwin enjoyed his family very much, especially playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-seven years Carolyn of Eben; two loving daughters Lee Ann (Allen) Seppanen and Susan (Jeff) Gohl both of Chatham; grandchildren April (Adam) Nordness, Greg and Kyle Seppanen, and Taylor (Amanda) Gohl; great-grandchildren Aidan, Owen , and Stephanie Nordness, and newest arrival Riley Mae Gohl; brothers Richard (Mary), William (Bonnie), and Robert (Joyce) Nelson; sisters – Marina (Frank) Krajewski, and Rita LeMaire; brothers-in-law Herb Burdick and Don (Pat) Johnson; sister-in-law – Nancy (Dick) McLauglin, and many nieces and nephews.

Edwin was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Patricia Nelson and Sharon Burdick; sister-in-law Virginia “Jenny” Nelson and brother-in-law Rod LeMaire.

Visitation will be on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at the Bowerman Funeral Home from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. A memorial service will begin at 5:00 p.m. with the American Legion and Vietnam Veteran Honor Guard conducting Military Honors followed by Pastor Paul Kelto officiating. A special thanks from Edwin’s family to all of the staff and Jacobetti for their care and compassion.
