Cacophony of cooking
MARQUETTE – Trudy Gray won the grand prize at the 37th annual 2013 Mining Journal Cookoff on Saturday.
Gray, a Marquette resident, prepared Layered Vegetable Terrine in the Appetizers category, a dish that wowed the judges’ panel. It won that category, then was chosen as the best recipe of the day from among the six category winners.
A finalist in three categories, Gray was the winner in a second, Main Dishes, with her entry Spinach Brie Crepes with Artichoke Cream Sauce.
Other category winners were Kris Hazeres of Marquette, Salads, with 80 Proof on a Plate; Frances Pfluger of Gwinn, For The Kids!, with Dressed Up Dogs; Cheryl Fleury of Ishpeming, Breads, with Bacon Corn Muffins with Savory Cream Sauce; and Brenda Washnock of Negaunee, Desserts, Red Velvet Cake/Cheesecake.
The cookoff took place at Chez Nous in Northern Michigan University’s Jacobetti Complex. Finalists prepared 18 dishes, three each in the six categories.
In addition to Gray, who competed in three categories, other participants with multiple dishes chosen as finalists were Gwendolyn Chapman of Gwinn; Lynn Kirkpatrick of Gwinn; Pfluger; and Fleury.
The other people participating as 2013 Cookoff finalists were: Sandy Etelamaki of Ishpeming; Whitney Mozader of Rudyard; and Carolyn McManis of Marquette.
The winning recipes, the other finalist recipes and all others entered will be featured in The Mining Journal Cookbook, which will be published as part of the Nov. 22 edition of the newspaper.
