Myrtis Grace Johnson

MARQUETTE, MI. – Myrtis Grace (Carkeek) Johnson, a resident of Hopkins, Minnesota, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday morning, August 28, 2013. She had been a resident of the Twin Cities since 1994.

Myrtis was born in Michigamme, MI on December 31, 1921, to Chester and Lillian (Blake) Carkeek. She was raised in Imperial Heights and graduated from L’Anse High School in 1939.

Her marriage to Orrin H. Johnson took place on May 14, 1941 in Merrill, Wisconsin. While a resident of Marquette, she was employed as a secretary at St. Luke’s Hospital (MGH) and also the Marquette School System.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 54 years; her brother, Byron Carkeek; sister-in-law, Fern Sundberg and husband, Byron; brothers-in-law, Glenn Johnson and John Dixon and wife, Audrey.

Surviving are her daughter, Janice Whitt of Savage, MN; grandson, David Whitt of Lincoln Nebraska, granddaughters, Jennifer (Paul) Spors of Chanhassen, Minnesota, and Robin (Matt Blesi) Whitt of Hopkins, Minnesota; sisters-in-law, Beulah Carkeek of L’Anse and Ev-Ann Johnson of Harvey; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, cherished friends and neighbors.

A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church, Marquette, on Saturday, October 19, at 2:00 pm. The family will greet guests beginning at 1:00 pm Saturday until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Augustana Chapel View Care Center, 615 Minnetonka Mills Road, Hopkins, MN 55343.

Inurnment will be made at the Northland Chapel Gardens.
