Donna S. Fountain
MARQUETTE, MI. – Donna S. Fountain, age 87, of 1227 Lakeshore Park Place, Marquette, passed away Tuesday morning, October 15, 2013, in the compassionate care of Lake Superior Hospice, Arcadia Home Care and her family.
Donna was born January 4, 1926, the eldest child of Carl M. and Irene (Nappe) Slick. She was raised in Marquette and graduated from John D. Pierce High School as valedictorian of the class of 1943. She attended Northern Michigan University, where she was a member of Kappa Delta Pi national honor sorority, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1947 and a Master of Arts in 1965.
On August 15, 1943, Donna married Robert G. Fountain, beginning their 68-year adventure. After living downstate for a few years, Donna and Bob returned to the U.P. to raise their family, settling in Ishpeming.
As the daughter of a college math instructor, it was natural for Donna to embark on a career in education, starting off as a substitute and becoming a math teacher at C. L. Phelps Intermediate School in Ishpeming, where she taught for twelve years.
In their free time, Donna and Bob enjoyed spending time at their camp on Lake Superior and fishing on the big lake, where she took pride in always catching more fish than the guys. She also loved to snowshoe in the winter and to spend fall days hunting partridge with Bob. Even in her later years she enjoyed riding backwoods roads and spotting wildlife. For several years Donna devoted her energy to breeding and raising Basenji dogs, showing them in dog shows in Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois.
Playing contract bridge was one of Donna’s passions, and she played in weekly games and tournaments locally and across the Midwest. She attained the status of Life Master, and continued to play until a few weeks before her death. Donna counted her bridge-playing partners (and opponents!) among her best friends.
Donna loved to travel, especially to warm places during the winter. She had a particular love for Hawaii and the opportunity to see live volcanoes. After Bob’s retirement, they started spending their winters in Florida. They eventually became full-time Florida residents for ten years before returning to Marquette in 2007 to get away from hurricanes and be close to Lake Superior.
Donna was a member of the American Contract Bridge league, the American Association of University Women, and Mensa.
Donna is survived by her sons, Dr. John (Janet Hewitt) Fountain of Iola, WI and Daniel (Judy) Fountain of Negaunee as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother David Slick and sister Nancy Drieth.
Honoring Donna’s wishes, no services are scheduled at this time. A memorial gathering to celebrate Donna and Bob’s lives will be announced at a later date. Memorials may be directed to UPAWS (Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter), P.O. Box 968, Marquette, MI 49855.
