U.P. post office evacuated

IRON MOUNTAIN – The Iron Mountain post office was closed for several hours Tuesday afternoon after an employee found a suspicious, unattended briefcase in the lobby.

Iron Mountain City Police Department officers were dispatched to the scene at 1:23 p.m.

Lt. Ed Mattson said the building was evacuated and Ludington Street from U.S. 2 to Carpenter Avenue was closed for safety reasons.

Postal inspectors were en route to the scene when the owner of the briefcase came back to the post office at about 4 p.m., Mattson said.

“It was determined that there was no threat,” he added.

Officers reopened the street and cleared the scene shortly thereafter.
