Prep volleyball roundup: Munising tops Big Bay in four sets

MUNISING – The Munising High School volleyball team rebounded from a first-set loss to beat Big Bay de Noc at home in four sets Monday, 19-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-14, to improve to 10-1 overall and 10-1 in the Central U.P. Conference.

Megan?Watson finished with eight digs and two aces for the Mustangs while Bailey Downs had 14 assists and three aces. Karlee Decet also had nine kills and one ace for Munising.

“We started off pretty slow but picked up the energy in the second and third game,” Munising coach Josh Cole said.


MSHS volleyball takes 2nd in Esky

ESCANABA – The Marquette Senior High School volleyball team finished second in the Escanaba Elks Invitational on Saturday, falling to Gladstone in the championship match in three sets, 25-21, 20-25, 15-10.

MSHS finished 4-2 in pool play to earn a No. 2 seed. The Redettes beat Ishpeming in the semifinals in three sets, 25-14, 17-25, 15-10.

Courtney McGovern led the Redettes in the tournament with 41 total assists, Tayler Smith had a team-high 24 kills, Hunter Viitala totaled 31 digs and Martha Storm finished with seven aces.

“I felt the team again took big steps forward today,” MSHS coach Michael Morgan said. “Numerous times throughout the day, they faced adversity and fought through it. At the pace that this group of amazing young women are improving, I am willing put them on the court with any team up here.”
