Prep cross country: Marquette Redmen, Redettes dominate invitational relays

MARQUETTE – The Marquette Senior High School Redmen and Redettes cross country teams both captured first place on Monday at the Marquette Invitational Relays on the MSHS campus.

Broken up into pairs, one runner embarked on a one-mile loop and had to tag his or her partner before he or she ran the same loop. Each person ran the loop three times for a total of six miles per team.

The Redettes took the top six spots and nine of the top 11 to finish with six points for first place.

The Redmen took the top two spots and three of the top four to win with seven points.

The MSHS duo of Lindsey Rudden and Shayla Huebner won the girls race in 34 minutes, 56 seconds.

The Redmen’s Lance Rambo and Cole Rieboldt won the boys race in 30:18.

Negaunee finished second in both races with Melanie Kniola and Wyleen Kniola leading the Miners’ girls by finishing seventh in 39:37. The Miners’ Keenan Gantz and Grant Johnson finished third in the boys race in 31:48.

Skyler Dakota and Ryan Hunt of Westwood finished fifth in 33:54, but Ishpeming edged out the Patriots for third in the boys race. Kazmine Langness and Mark Holmgren led the Hematites by taking seventh in 34:33.

Also in the boys’ race, fifth-place Gwinn was led by Alex Anderson and Luke Redlon (ninth, 35:53) and sixth-place North Star Academy was led by Jake Bastian and John-Henry Kibit (eighth, 35:43).

Westwood’s Annie Bjork and Gabrielle French took 10th in the girls race in 41:06 as the WHS girls finished third. The IHS girls were fourth and led by the 12th-place duo of Khora Swanson and Lena Greger (43:09).

Team scores were determined by the top three pairs while the top eight pairs medaled in each race.
