Harold R. Anderson
MARQUETTE, MI. – Harold R. Anderson, enjoying his retirement in Marquette Michigan, died October 4, 2013 at the age of 85, surrounded by his wife Helen and family, comforted by his faith.
He was born at his family home in Ferndale, Michigan on November 15, 1927.
He worked his way through school to earn an engineering degree from Michigan Technological University in 1950 and served two years in the U.S. Army supervising reconstruction programs in Germany.
He was a professional engineer with a career that spanned over 30 years, with 20 of those years engineering and evaluating wheeled and tracked prototype vehicles for General Dynamics Land Systems Division in Warren, MI.
He raised three sons with his first wife Lois, in Southfield Michigan, and later in Clarkson, MI.
His passion was heading north with the family – summer or winter, and the further north the better. Camping on Lake Superior cemented his vision for ultimately retiring on the big lake.
January 1994, Harold married Helen Lord several years after the death of their spouses. The union combined two families, Harold’s three sons and Helen’s three daughters, their spouses and children.
Harold cherished family and time spent cheering on the endeavors of his 14 grandchildren. He loved being involved in the community and enjoyed singing in the choir as a member of Messiah Lutheran Church.
Despite challenges to his health in the past few years, he always had an eye toward the future. With his actions, he demonstrated generosity of spirit, prioritized others, and focused his talents on making things better.
Helen and family greatly appreciated the love and care Harold received from so many that allowed him to enjoy his life to the fullest when challenged by his declining health, especially care givers Steven Westfall and Bill Sampson for their dedication over the last several months.
The family is also grateful for the caregivers at UP Home Nursing and the medical and nursing staff at Marquette General Hospital for their knowledge and skill that helped him through these challenges.
Harold is survived by his sons, Richard (Sarah) Anderson and grandchildren Troy and Conor of Marquette MI, Robert (Wendy) Anderson and grandchildren, William and Trent of Commerce MI, Jon (Alisa) Anderson and grandchildren, Amy and Sarah of Livonia MI; his wife, Helen Lord Anderson and her daughters, Martha Leonard (Brent) and grandchildren, Amber and Ian of Houghton MI, and Linnea Weyandt (Allen Gazdik) and grandchildren, Trisha Evans (Robert), Jessica and Nicole of Iron River WI, and Cynthia Ketzenberger (Brent) and grandchildren, Reegan, Hadley and Braden of Marquette MI.
Harold was preceded in death by his first wife Lois, a brother, Carl and parents, Carl and Hilda Issacson Anderson.
A family service was held at Marquette Park Cemetery on October 11, 2013.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 30th at 1:00 PM beginning with a Memorial Service for family and friends at Messiah Lutheran Church.
Tributes in lieu of flowers are greatly appreciated to either The Woodson Fund at Mott Children’s Hospital (victors.us/HaroldAnderson) 1000 Oakbrook Drive, Suite 100 Ann Arbor Michigan 48104-6815 or Messiah Lutheran Church, 305 West Magnetic Street, Marquette Michigan 49855.
Always eager to solve a problem, engineer a solution and share a big laugh that filled the room, Harold will be missed.
