Alberta Mae Winters

MARQUETTE, MI. – Alberta Winters, age 86, entered eternal life Tuesday evening, October 8, 2013, at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming.

Alberta was born August 31, 1927 in Brampton Township, Michigan to Samuel and Mary (Ingalls) Counterman, and was raised in the Brampton area. During her childhood, the family moved around mostly throughout the Upper Peninsula.

She later married John Otis Winters, and together the couple raised seven sons. A homemaker for most of her life, she occasionally helped her husband in the woods logging. Known for her great cooking skills, she ran a good household, always providing in any way she could. She not only enjoyed sewing, knitting and crocheting, but used these skills to keep up with the children’s clothes. Alberta enjoyed canning and would often preserve fresh fruits brought up from a family farm in Lower Michigan, in addition to canning venison, which helped get her family through the winter. In her later years, she was active in the lives of many of her grandchildren. Alberta, like many others of her generation, was a simple person who was a hard worker and made no fuss when times were hard. She lived a good, long life and will be missed by many.

She is survived by her sons, Richard (Sandy) Winters, Dennis (Karen) Winters, Johnny Winters, Melvin (Julie) Winters, Steven (Peggy) Winters and Scott Winters; several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters and two brothers; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and special friend, Louis Houghton

In addition to her parents, Alberta was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, John Otis Winters; a son, Paul Winters; along with one brother and one sister.

Honoring Alberta’s request, no public services will be held at this time. The Fassbender Funeral Home is serving the family, where condolences may be expressed online at
